Women’s Empowerment Unit

This Unit is concerned with all issues related to women, Combating violence in all its forms against them by highlighting the leading role of women. Based on the principle of directing efforts and shedding light on achieving gender equality in educational institutions and in line with the fifth goal of the United Nations Development Program 2015-2030 (gender equality), a women’s empowerment unit has been established in all Iraqi universities, which is technically linked to the Women Empowerment Department in the Ministry of Higher Education, which in turn is linked to the Department of Women Empowerment in the Secretariat of the Council of Ministers. Administratively, the unit is linked to the office of the Vice President of the University for Scientific Affairs within the structure of the Department of Scientific Affairs and its affiliated formations, within a unified vision to enhance the role of women in management and leadership, to stand against all forms of discrimination, and to formulate public policies that guarantee equal opportunities for both genders at all levels, starting from setting equal opportunities for admission in all academic programs of all kinds and for all disciplines, passing through equal tasks for both sexes as faculty members, and ending with achieving Equality between males and females in holding middle and senior administrative and leadership positions.

 

Vision:

Empowering women to be key actors in achieving sustainable development in a country that guarantees them all their constitutional rights, makes them capable of dealing with challenges, enhances their role in all fields, achieves full protection for them, and guarantees them – without any discrimination – economic, social and political opportunities that enable them to upgrade their capabilities to raise our nation.

 

Mission:

Providing women with skills and knowledge, developing them to be effective and efficient community members and leaders, participating in decision-making and influencing its formulation and strategic activation, in a way that meets the needs of the nation in the current and future stage.

 

Goals:

  1. Work to increase the percentage of women leaders in the Ministry of Higher Education by highlighting women’s competencies and their achievements.
  2. Developing the scientific capabilities of women in higher education by facilitating and supporting their participation in local and international conferences.
  3. Enhancing women’s participation in economic development by supporting entrepreneurial projects and technology incubators.
  4. Obtaining the support of the international community and local and global organizations to contribute to the implementation of United Nations resolutions on women.
  5. Increasing society’s awareness of the status of women and their rights and combating violence by holding more courses and conducting research with specialized centers.
  6. Improving the image of women in the media in all its visual, audio and print forms.
  7. Honoring creative and distinguished Iraqi women in their fields of specialization through creative awards or making documentaries about their achievements.
  8. Supporting young female researchers who carry out distinguished research at an early age in the PhD stage, according to specialized committees that select distinguished works for the purpose of supporting them.
  9. Work to integrate the concept of gender into the Ministry’s plans and programs.

 

Unit Strategy:

Emphasis on the commitment of the Ministry and universities to women’s rights and their implementation in accordance with what has been approved by national charters, foremost of which is the constitution, and international agreements, charters and declarations to which Iraq is committed, through the following axes:

  1. Empowering women’s leadership and enhancing their leadership roles by stimulating participation in holding leadership positions inside the Ministry, Universities and outside them, preparing women to succeed in these positions, and preventing discrimination against the Woman.
  2. Protecting women by eliminating negative phenomena that threaten their lives, safety and dignity, and preventing them from effective participation in all fields, including violence against women, and protecting them from environmental dangers that may negatively affect them in social or economic terms.
  3. Social empowerment of women by creating opportunities for greater social participation for women and expanding their capabilities to choose, and preventing practices that perpetuate discrimination against women or that harm them, whether in the public or private spheres.
  4. Obtaining the support of the international community and local and global organizations to contribute to the implementation of United Nations resolutions on women.
  5. Increasing society’s awareness of the status of women and their rights and combating violence by holding more courses and conducting research with specialized centers.
  6. Economic empowerment of women through developing women’s capabilities to expand their work options, increase their participation in the labor force, and achieve equal opportunities in employing women in all sectors, in entrepreneurship, and in holding positions in public bodies and private companies.
